Wireless Security

Change the wireless router’s preset username and password

The first step to bring in security is to change the default username / password.

This will disallow a hacker from accessing the router's administrative pages.

Most routers come with a preset username / password which is well documented in the router manual thus making it available for hackers to use.

Change the wireless router’s preset SSID

The next step is to change the default SSID of the wireless router.

Every wireless router uses a network name also know as SSID which is usually preset by the manufacturers.

Keeping the default SSID makes it easy for hackers to come in.

Disable SSID Broadcast

All the wireless routers broadcast the SSID. This is to let others in the range know about it.

For home use, this feature is unnecessary, and it increases the likelihood someone will try to log in to your home network.

Disable this feature. The SSID name can be manually entered into your devices.

Switch on encryption

All wireless routers support some kind of encryption [WPA, WEP and many more] that scrambles messages sent over the air and ensure that they cannot be intercepted by hackers.

Choose the desired encryption, WPA being the best.

MAC Address filtering

Every wireless router is capable of tracking the MAC addresses for all computers/devices that connect to them.

Such connections can be controlled using the MAC addresses.

This will allow restricting the network to only the designated computers/devices.

Switch Off DHCP, Use Static IPs

With DHCP enabled, hackers can easily obtain a valid IP addresses from your network's DHCP pool.

Switch off DHCP

Set a fixed private IP address range Configure each connected device to match the range

Enable wireless router’s firewall

Ensure that your router's firewall is turned on.

About me

I am a hard-core techno geek.

I am always:

  • Keen on researching and experimenting with new technologies
  • Seen active in the playgrounds such as Programming languages, Hardware, Mobile phones, Networking and the Internet

I began my vocation as a Programmer, moved up as Database Designer - Systems Analyst - Lead Architect.

During this phase, I crafted and lead several commercial applications using PHP with MySQL community server or Oracle as the data store.

Currently, I am a lead Technical Author in a software development house called SEEinfobiz Pvt. Ltd.

As a technical writer, my primary role is to make the Project leads and Team leads collectively aware of the scope of each commercial application that is being developed, by crafting the High-level and Low-level design documents.

I closely monitor the life cycle of every commercial application or business process being carried out to ensure the best documentation as the final outcome.

I also consult with several software houses in Mumbai, India, to help them design and manage database applications.

In addition to documentation, I heavily use Open source technologies such as Joomla, Wordpress, Mediawiki, PHP, MySQL, Apache and Linux.

My next most rewarding time is spent in WRITING books. Till date, I have authored and co-authored more than 10 technical books which are widely referred across the globe. These books focus on a wide variety of topics such as Oracle, PHP, MySQL, Linux, Visual Basic .NET, Java Server Programming, Ajax, and so on.
