iPhone To Samsung Galaxy S PDF Print E-mail

I’ve had an itching to get a new phone for a while.

Finally I made a choice b/w iPhone 4 and Samsung Galaxy S.

For me, iPhone seems way overpriced. After iPhone 3g, this time, I chose not to be dependent on Apple, as to what I can and can't do with a phone.

Samsung Galaxy S GT-i9000

Once the phone arrived, I committed myself to using the phone, as my primary phone. I popped the SIM card out of my iPhone, transferred it to the Samsung Galaxy S and gave my 3g to my wife, which I always do Wink.

I have been an iPhone user, since the last three years. I’ve just spent the past week using a Samsung Galaxy S [GT-i9000]. I did this to become more acquainted with what Android has to offer as compared to iOS.

Android is certainly a capable smart-phone operating system. In fact, if the iPhone never existed, it’d be pretty great.

While the main purpose of this experiment was to get accustomed to Android as a platform, I’d be remiss, if I didn’t mention a few things about the actual hardware:

  • The Galaxy S is Samsung’s latest device with Google’s Android OS.
  • The device is lighter than the iPhone. The phone weighs in at 119 grams.
  • The battery is removable.
  • It’s a touchscreen phone and measures in at 122.4*64.2*9.9mm.
  • It fits in easily even into the tightest of pockets.
  • Coupled with the 1GHz processor.

From my last week’s experience, here’s what I like about Android:

  • Notifications: Android’s notifications system is awesome and so far superior to the iPhone. In the iPhone you get a single notification at a time and once it is dismissed its gone forever, Android queues up the notifications so you can go through them when it’s convenient for you.

  • Multitasking: With Android I can play Music in the background while surfing the Web or refreshing Facebook.

  • Home Screen: The home screen has the ability to add widgets to the desktop. Rather than having a static icon that will open my calendar application, I instead have a calendar widget with today’s date and my next upcoming event listed. On my social media home screen, I have a Twitter widget that has the latest tweet in my timeline and the ability to reply to it.

  • Cloud syncing: Using your Google account credentials Android fetches all of your data such as contacts, mails, calendar items.

  • Account syncing: The Twitter and Facebook applications sync your followers and friends with your contact list. Not only this, when I click on a user’s contact page, it not only shows the contact information, but also offers to open their Facebook or Twitter profiles right from there. The best part is that it also updates the user’s profile picture to match their current online avatar and most recent status update.

  • Gallery: The Gallery app is a fairly capable photo viewer, and also uses Picassa to sync pictures.

  • Email: There are two email applications on Androi, one for Gmail users and one for IMAP/POP3/Exchange. The Gmail client is pretty nice and supports push email.

After a week of using Android, I’m conflicted. If you had asked me last Wednesday what phone i’d be using a week from now, I’d without a doubt say the iPhone. Now that we’re here, however, I am sticking with Android until the iPhone 5 ships.

I’m also eagerly awaiting the release of Froyo [Andriod 2.2] for my Samsung Galaxy S, which will offer a lot of new features I’d like to toy with in the near term.

MTNL 3g Jadoo [Some more itching...]

Now since this is a 3g phone, was curious to play even more, so bought a 3g SIM card from MTNL called MTNL 3g Jadoo – Trump, recharged with the 3G 250 data card coupon which gives me 500 MB of surfing valid for 30 days.

Surfing is super fast.

I tried video call with my wife, the video is smooth voice service is excellent. Call rates are quite competitive.

All in all, not a bad start, feels nice to finally experience something so widely discussed.
