Setting Up A Network In Linux PDF Print E-mail

Click Start -> System Settings -> Network.

The Loading Network Settings screen will appear. After a few moments the actual user interface via which network settings can be done will open up.

The Network Configuration user interface opens up as shown above. Assuming that there has been no attempt made to setup a network earlier it will be empty as shown above. Click New.

The Select Device Type screen opens up. Select Ethernet Connection and click. This will instruct the wizard to scan the system for all the Ethernet cards and display a list.

After a minute the Select Ethernet Device screen opens up as shown above. This has a list of all the Ethernet cards discovered during the scan done by this wizard. In this case there are two Ethernet cards the 1st and 2nd. The 1st card represents eth0, the 2nd card represents eth1 and so on. Select the 1st and click Forward. The Configure Network Settings screen opens up.

The IP address is going to be entered manually, click Statically set IP Addresses radio button. In Address enter an IP address, which will identify the computer on the network. In Subnet Mask enter a subnet mask value (or accept the default which displays immediately). If the computer logs on to the Internet then in the Default Gateway Address enter the IP of the computer, which is the gateway to the Internet on the Network or delete any default value displayed there and leave it blank.
